Why Buying More Bins Won’t Fix Your Organization Problem
Let me start with a confession:
I love a good bin.
A beautiful basket? A perfectly sized drawer organizer? A container that somehow makes a chaotic cabinet look like it belongs in a magazine?
Yes. Absolutely. When I couldn’t afford to renovate my master closet and I found a perfectly sized shoe shelf that fit into my existing space without construction I did an actual happy dance.
But here’s the thing: bins are not an organization system.
They are the final step of one.
And this is where a lot of people get stuck: They buy the containers. They spend a Saturday decanting snacks into matching jars. They create a beautifully organized space that looks amazing for approximately 72 hours.
And then real life happens.
The system falls apart because the system was never actually built.
Organization is not about where things go. It’s about how life flows.
A truly organized home is not one where every item has a cute label. It’s one where your home supports the way you actually live.
Before I organize any space, I think through questions like:
What do you use every day?
What do you reach for constantly?
What creates the most frustration?
What habits already exist?
What would make this space easier to maintain?
Because the best organizing system is not the one that looks the prettiest.
It’s the one you’ll still use six months from now.
The problem with organizing before editing
One of the biggest mistakes people make is trying to organize everything they own before deciding what actually deserves space in their home.
You can buy the most beautiful storage products in the world, but they cannot solve the fundamental problem of having too much stuff.
(Trust me. The internet has tried. The internet has sold us many baskets. Home Goods has sold us many baskets.)
The first step is always understanding what you have, what you use, and what is actually adding value to your life.
Then, and only then, do we create systems.
Your home should work with your brain, not against it
The best home organization systems reduce the number of decisions you have to make.
You shouldn’t need to remember where something goes every time you put it away.
You shouldn’t need to reorganize the same drawer every month.
You shouldn’t need a burst of motivation just to maintain your own home.
A good system becomes almost invisible.
Your coffee supplies live together because you make coffee every morning.
Your dog’s things are easy to access because walks happen every day.
Your most-used items are within reach because your life happens in patterns.
(Yes, your home has patterns. Even if your current system is “throw everything in the closest available drawer.”)
Beautiful spaces are a result of functional systems
I love beautiful homes. I love thoughtful design. I love spaces that feel intentional.
But aesthetics come after function.
Because a home that photographs beautifully but doesn’t work for your life is just another source of frustration.
The goal isn’t to create a showroom.
The goal is to create a home that feels calm when you walk through the door. A home where things are easy to find. A home where maintaining order doesn’t feel like another full-time job.
The Exhale approach
At Exhale Home Organization, I don’t start with products.
I start with you.
Your routines.
Your priorities.
Your habits.
Your actual life.
Then we build systems that make everything easier.
And yes, once we’ve created the right system?
That’s when we get to the fun part.
The bins.
